Peafowl

Indian Blue Peafowl

The Indian Blue Peafowl is native to India but has proved to be a hardy species in nearly any climate. The male peacock has iridescent blue-green or green colored plumage. The tail of the peacock, known as a "train," is actually elongated upper tail coverts. The train feathers have a series of eyes that are best seen when the train is fanned. The actual tail feathers are short and gray-colored and can be seen from behind when a peacock's train is fanned in a courtship display. During the molting season, the males shed their stunning train feathers and reveal the unassuming gray-colored tail, which is normally hidden from view beneath the train. They also have a crest atop the head.

If allowed to free range, care should be taken when first introduced to new surroundings. They should be kept penned up for a least a week to acclimate to their new home. They perch at night on the highest structure available and will forage during the day. Males are called a peacock and females a peahen, The peahen has a mixture of dull green, brown, and grey in her plumage. She lacks the long upper tail coverts of the male but has a crest. The female can also display her plumage to ward off female competition or danger to her young. In a few months the female chicks will begin to loose the barring on the wings, shoulders and back and will become a dusky brown in these areas. Males will keep the black and white bars and will often have longer legs than the females. The young "peachicks" are not difficult to raise and are fed a gamebird or turkey starter.

The breeding season normally begins in March and lasts through July. Hens normally lay 6 to 8 eggs which incubate for 28 days. Peachicks not reared by their parents will require extra attention, much like Poults, as they will easily die from cold.
